Luxury tourer BMW GTL Exclusive looks at the competitors a bit from the side, and definitely down. And not just because it is different form-factor and is closer to the sport tourists, rather than to the cruiser as Honda’s “Gold” and Harley’s “Electra”. In contrast to the aforesaid “colleagues”, it is crammed with the most modern technology, which BMW Motorrad only has in the arsenal. And, of course, the sum of these technologies is not able to not result in a corresponding cost comparable to the cost of a car of the same brand.
What is the list of terms? Central locking with an alarm system, fully keyless access (even trunks ca be locked-unlocked with a key fob), heated handlebar grips and seat, electronic adjustment of the suspension ESA II, the DTC system (Dynamic Traction Control) with three modes of engine operation (Rain, Road, Dynamic), pressure control system in RDC tires, LED fog lights, daytime running lights, adaptive head lights, advanced onboard computer BMW Pro, and motor protection. As well as the side and top box with a comfortable inner bags, ABS Pro and, help system at startup on the rise. (A next year quickshifter will appear!) Serious kit! Not every car of the same cost can boast the same.
Various modes of operation of the engine – for a long time have not been uncommon for modern motorcycles, and electronically adjustable suspension also has “slipped” in our reviews, and the adaptive light is familiar for many drivers due to the cars. Therefore, the most interesting of all the GTL Exclusive technology set is probably the progressive front suspension Duolever. So progressive, that from this year it is only on motorcycles of K Series 1600 – apparently conservative European rider does get along with it.
Duolever is a square design, where the two forged steel longitudinal arms are attached to the frame by means of rolling bearings. The center stack, based on the frame, is responsible for cushioning and damping, and has a hinged connection with the lower longitudinal arm. Unlike the telescopic fork and even the other front suspension of BMW – Telelever, Duolever design provides high torsional stiffness and, most significantly the driver resists dive under braking.
The absence of the usual dive at first confuses yet because, apparently, as “compensation” motorcycle at a low speed rolls and resists worse when braking tries not to swing forward, but rolls onto its side. When unaccustomed, and at its high landing one can be trapped!
Motor of BMW K 1600 GT is a low speed narrow row “six”, located with cylinders forward to provide a motorcycle with comparatively low center of gravity. Torque – an impressive 175 Nm, 70% of which is already available from 1500 rpm. “Basic” capacity of 160 hp can be reduced to 107 hp – suddenly someone will need this. In general, the power and the thrill! About the chassis, suspension tuning and driving pleasure should not even be mentioned: in spite of the size, the bike perfectly laid up to footrests, holds any given path, is easily reloaded from side to side in turns, turns on the half bands.
And we once again remains to summarize: yes, Honda Gold Wing and Harley-Davidson Electra Glide have more “soul” and charisma, but modern man, accustomed to an abundance of gadgets and riding in a modern safe car with a bunch of electronic assistants want the same from the motorcycle. That there was no difference on what to ride – four or two wheels. And give such opportunity of all grandtourers can only BMW K 1600 GT. Especially in a full complete set Exclusive.
